Lycaonx Wolfsbane His Destined Mate Chapter 2:
Linnea’s POV
“Linnea!” Elara gave me a tight hug. “I’m so happy you came.”
“I wouldn’t miss this for anything in the world,” I replied with a warm smile, returning the hug.
“Thank you for doing this,” Elara looked a bit embarrassed.
“You know you can count on me, no need to thank me,” I said, pulling my backpack off my shoulders.
“I bought some jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers,” I paused, biting my lip in frustration. “But I forgot about underwear.”
“No problem,” Elara chuckled, her smile playful. “We can easily fix that later.” She quickly undressed and handed her clothes to Linnea. They had planned everything meticulously and hoped that it would all go smoothly. If they could attract the attention of the wolves from the Pack with the scent of her clothes on Linnea, Elara would have time to leave the forest surrounding the Alpha’s location, putting on new clothes so they would never know where to look for her.
“I have some money in the glove compartment for whatever you need,” I said, handing her the car keys. “Don’t use your credit card for a few days.”
“Thank you,” Elara sounded nervous. “You know I would never put you in danger, right?”
“Of course, I know,” I smiled, trying to reassure her as I undressed as well. “I don’t even question it.”
“When they scent you, they’ll chase you. But they won’t harm you,” Elara sighed in frustration. “When they realize you’re not the one they’re looking for, they’ll take you to him, but you’ll always be safe.”
“But he’ll be furious, won’t he?” I asked anxiously, biting my lip.
“Yes,” Elara sighed. “If you have any doubts, I’ll understand.”
“I have no doubts,” I smiled, shaking my head without hesitation. “It will be an adventure.”
“In my heart, I know he wants to change some things too,” Elara sighed in frustration, putting her backpack on her back. “By distancing myself from here, I think I’m giving him a chance.”
“Well, it’s allowing you to choose your mate freely,” I grumbled. “That would be a good start, indeed.”
“I believe he also wants to be mated with his life partner, but he simply gave up waiting,” Elara sighed. “It’s not easy to find our destined mates, and they’re pressuring him to have an heir.”
“Why?” I looked at Elara, a bit confused. “If it’s so important for your happiness, he should wait for the right woman.”
“He has always been a bit of a womanizer, hoping to find his mate one day,” Elara wasn’t very experienced in matters of love; after all, she had never fallen in love before. But she knew that in her kind, things weren’t as simple as in Linnea’s world. “But that didn’t happen, and it reaches a point where we eventually give up.”
“He can’t miss it that much if he’s a womanizer,” I shook my head.
“He doesn’t mind mating with a woman who isn’t his true mate because he’s thinking of the good of the Pack,” Elara explained. “In this case, he’s not thinking of his own happiness.”
“But I don’t understand,” I said as I gathered my long hair with a hair tie. “How can he think it’s good for the Pack to mate with you if you’re not his mate?”
“Because I’m loyal!” Elara declared proudly, as if that were reason enough. “Without sincere feelings and with an outsider wolf, there’s a higher chance of a power struggle, Lycaonx could die, and our Pack would suffer greatly.” Elara shook her head. “He gave me all the logical arguments for us to do this. In a way, he’s right; it would be terrible if we lost him.”
“He’s right?” I looked at her in disbelief.
“At least in his logic,” Elara said seriously to her friend. “That’s why I accepted.”
“Elara, there’s no logic in an agreement where both sides gain nothing,” I sighed deeply.
“But as I told you, he’s thinking of the Pack,” Elara sighed in frustration.
“But why doesn’t he confront them about this?” I said firmly. “As you said, he’s been Alpha for years and is feared.”
“It’s not because he’s afraid of a fight,” Elara took a deep breath. “He’s fierce, but he would be challenged for a long time. During that period, the Pack could disband, create problems. Unfortunately, the council is still clinging to the old laws.”
“They should have changed those laws a long time ago,” I huffed in frustration.
“Remember that some laws are the reason we’ve survived among humans in peace,” Elara smiled, looking at Linnea. “So, when you change something, it has to be done very carefully and with strong arguments; otherwise, it will be chaos. And, on the one hand, he never needed to question anything.”
“Well,” I said ironically, “Until now.”
“Yes,” Elara laughed. “This news caught him as off guard as it did me.” Frustrated, she added, “He protects us and leads us with a firm hand; he’s an excellent leader.”
“I can see you admire him,” I said with a sigh.
“I confess I do, but that doesn’t make me love him or make him my mate,” Elara said, looking dejected. “We would both be unhappy.”
“But if you told him, you had changed your mind, he wouldn’t accept it?” I asked with curiosity and hidden concern.
“Of course, he would accept it, but he would eventually persuade me,” Elara replied immediately.
“How so?” I said, perplexed. “You’re not easily manipulated; I’ve known you for a long time.”
“You’re absolutely right,” she laughed. “But if he didn’t accept, the council would organize a hunt to claim a she-wolf.”
“That would solve your problem,” I said, placing my hands on my hips as I looked at her. “He would be the only one unhappy in this story, and you would be free.”
“No, Linnea,” Elara said seriously, looking at her long-time friend. “By bringing in a she-wolf from another pack, we would be living in constant alert and distrust. I don’t wish that on anyone, let alone my siblings. That’s why I accepted it. We would be free from this problem if I, a she-wolf from our own pack, stayed by the Alpha’s side, leading.”
“I understand,” I breathed deeply, analyzing her stance. “You would sacrifice yourself for all of them.”
“He can’t fail to uphold the pack’s law,” Elara nodded with a self-conscious smile. “As Alpha, he wants to set an example by following the laws.” She sighed in frustration. “But I can be absent for a while, which will give him a chance to find another solution.”
“Can he manage it?” I asked skeptically. “He seems very arrogant.”
“He appears to be!” Elara smiled, and Linnea had no idea what her Alpha was like. “But he deserves to be as happy as the rest of us, and I believe he will still find his mate.”
“Do you really think so?” I huffed, imagining an arrogant beast leading those wolves.
“You can’t imagine what it’s like to be mated for life and suddenly find your destined mate,” Elara muttered a curse under her breath. “I won’t condemn him to that, nor myself.”
“Then you’d better go now,” I said with a smile.
“Yes!!!” Elara smiled back. “I’ll call you later.”
“Okay,” I watched her for a moment; Elara moved with the grace of a wolf she was. “Take care, my friend,” I whispered softly, marveled by their existence even after all these years we had spent together. As I lost sight of Elara, I prepared to move in the opposite direction.
After twenty minutes without stopping, my lungs asked for a break, and I agreed. Out of breath, I leaned against a tree and let myself fall. I just hoped that Elara had already reached the car safely because at that moment, my neck tingled, and I knew… even though I couldn’t see anything around me… I was being intensely watched…
